Stimulus check, 7 months in

Posted by Despina Karras  Published in Economy and Free Markets, Stimulus

It’s been seven months since the stimulus bill was passed. Just shortly after his inauguration, President Obama issued this statement.
“There are many numbers in this plan…It will put billions of dollars in immediate tax relief into the pockets of working families.
But out of all these numbers, there is one that matters most to me: this [...]

Salesperson-in-chief gets to work on health care reform

Posted by Despina Karras  Published in Economy and Free Markets, Health Care

President Obama continued his sales pitch for health care reform this weekend, making the rounds of the Sunday talk show circuit. During an interview with George Stephanopoulos that aired today, Obama said, “We’re not going to have other people carrying your burdens for you.” To say this was an unexpected sentiment coming from this President would [...]

When all else fails, claim discrimination!

Posted by Despina Karras  Published in Health Care

The idea of health care as a constitutional right has already been debunked. But if you thought that was a stretch, you might be shocked, or perhaps offended, by the newest distracting, exploitive position of some on the left – health care as a civil right. Some, like Jonathan Alter of Newsweek, believe that the left is losing the fight [...]

Why Americans are turning on ObamaCare

Posted by Despina Karras  Published in Economy and Free Markets, Health Care

The verdict is in: a majority of Americans now oppose ObamaCare. According to Rasmussen, 53% oppose Democrats’ proposals, with disapproval ratings up 9% since June. 51% believe health care costs will increase under Obama’s plan, and just 19% think the proposed measures will bring health care costs down.
Gallup has compiled a ten-point list summarizing Americans’ problems with Democrats’ [...]

Justifying government interference by demonizing, oversimplifying

Posted by Despina Karras  Published in Economy and Free Markets, Role of Government

This week, the House passed a bill that imposes further regulations on financial firms – on executive pay which is bad enough in itself, and to add insult to injury, on the way those firms and employees do business. The bill is“aimed at preventing financial firms from adopting compensation systems that encourage excessive risk-taking.” Once [...]

Looking to the Founding Fathers for Answers

Posted by Despina Karras  Published in Role of Government

Yesterday, in his weekly address, President Obama called on Americans to “summon the same spirit that inhabited Independence Hall two hundred and thirty-three years ago”.
This is one time when I can get behind President Obama’s sentiments – although he may not like my reasons for it. What Obama failed to recognize in making that statement [...]

Obama supporters on cap and trade: a huge tax that will decrease GDP

Posted by Despina Karras  Published in Cap-and-Trade, Economy and Free Markets

“I think if you get into the way it was written, it’s a huge tax and there’s no sense calling it anything else. I mean, it is a tax.”
So says Warren Buffett, Chairman of Berkshire Hathaway and perhaps even more importantly, one of the President’s biggest supporters in the economic realm. No truer words were [...]

What We Can Learn From Venezuela

Posted by Despina Karras  Published in Economy and Free Markets

This week, the wacky government of Venezuela banned Coke Zero from being sold in the country. Citing harmful ingredients, it claimed to be protecting the health of its citizens, while the government purports to conduct an investigation into potentially dangerous ingredients in the soft drink.
In reality, the move has nothing to do with the safety [...]

Congratulations America! You will soon own GM.

Posted by Despina Karras  Published in Auto Bailouts, Economy and Free Markets

Despite the President’s assurances that he does not want to be in the car business and that “we cannot make the survival of our auto industry dependent on an unending flow of taxpayer dollars”, in just a few hours, you, the taxpayers of America, will own General Motors. Tomorrow, GM will file for bankruptcy marking [...]
